Mirzapur The Movie adds Rs 11.75 crore in third weekend, eyes Rs 225 crore India close

Mirzapur: The Movie is still filling seats in its third week at the Indian box office. The crime thriller collected about Rs 11.75 crore nett in India over its third weekend, a figure the trade estimates agree on. Directed by Gurmmeet Singh, it stars Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Jitendra Kumar and Ravi Kishan.

The third Sunday on September 20 brought in the region of Rs 4.65 crore to Rs 4.75 crore, with occupancy reported at 26 per cent across 4,400 shows. The third Monday then added an estimated Rs 1.75 crore, a 40 per cent fall from the third Friday, taking the first four days of week three to Rs 13.50 crore.

The cumulative number depends on who is counting. One set of trade estimates places the India nett at Rs 211.25 crore, while another puts it at Rs 219.77 crore after 17 days. Both point to the same landing spot, with the film expected to reach around Rs 216 crore nett by the end of the third week and to finish close to Rs 225 crore nett in India.

The money behind the film looks even better than the ticket count. Reports say Mirzapur: The Movie is now the most profitable release of Pankaj Tripathi's career, with a net profit of Rs 129.77 crore on a budget of Rs 90 crore and a return on investment of 144.19 per cent. That reportedly clears OMG 2, which made a profit of Rs 85 crore on a Rs 65 crore budget for a 131 per cent return.

Overseas, the film is said to have taken Rs 52 crore gross, lifting the worldwide gross to Rs 311.35 crore in 17 days. Reports say that makes it the biggest global earner in the 25-year history of Excel Entertainment, ahead of Raees at Rs 287.17 crore and Gully Boy at Rs 235.47 crore, and the banner's first film to cross Rs 300 crore worldwide. It is produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's Excel Entertainment along with Amazon MGM Studios.

Trade watchers are calling it a super hit and the third biggest hit of the year so far, behind Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Hanuman Ansh. The bigger takeaway is that a streaming title has made the jump to theatres and worked, at a time when the box office leans more and more on known IPs.
