Toxic heads to ZEE5 on September 25 after a brutal theatrical run

Toxic was built up as the biggest and most ambitious pan-India film to come out of Kannada cinema. What followed at the box office was the opposite of that ambition. Negative word of mouth started spreading from the very first shows, and the film never found a way back.

By the end of its theatrical run, Toxic had reportedly collected around Rs. 300 crore gross. Against a reported breakeven target of about Rs. 800 crore, that number left the film far short of safety.

The digital side of the story turned out to be just as rough. Before release, reports said streaming platforms had put offers of around Rs. 150 crore on the table for the digital rights. Yash reportedly turned those down, betting that the value would climb once the film opened big in theatres. After the theatrical result, offers are said to have dropped to roughly Rs. 30 crore, and the makers had little room to argue.

Now the film gets its second test. Toxic starts streaming on ZEE5 on September 25, this time without a ticket price and without the weight of expectation it carried into theatres. Viewers who skipped it on the big screen can now sample it at home, already knowing what the theatrical audience thought of it.

Streaming can cut either way for a film like this. Lower expectations sometimes let a rejected film find a small pocket of viewers who enjoy it. On the other hand, watching at home makes every weak scene easier to notice, and easier to pick apart in public.

The theatres have already given their verdict. What the streaming run will show is whether any section of the audience sees something the first crowd missed. For Toxic, September 25 is one last chance to argue that there was more to it than the disaster people walked out of.
