Rajinikanth explains why he refused Baasha 2 and Petta 2 but said yes to Jailer 2
Rajinikanth says he turned down sequels to Baasha and Petta because he does not like sequels, but watching Jailer again on OTT convinced him its story had room for a second part.
Rajinikanth has revealed that he said no to sequels of Baasha and Petta before agreeing to star in Nelson Dilipkumar's Jailer 2.
"Usually, I don't prefer sequels," the superstar said at the Jailer 2 Super Show pre-release event. In his view, a second part often takes whatever worked the first time and simply piles on more spice.
The offers were real. Rajinikanth said Sathya Movies came to him with Baasha 2, while Karthik Subbaraj pitched a Petta 2 that would have carried Vijay Sethupathi's character forward. He turned both down.
Jailer changed his mind. The actor said he watched the film again after it reached OTT and noticed the climax. Just before Varma is finished off, the villain warns that a much larger network stands behind him and will not spare the hero. Rajinikanth also pointed to the three containers worth Rs 1,000 crore in the film. To him, that added up to a perfect setup for a sequel.
Telugu audiences have a reason to watch this closely. According to Rajinikanth, Nelson had committed to a Telugu film first but pushed that project back so he could direct Jailer 2.
In the sequel, Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer whose quiet life is once again pulled back into violence.
