Ektaa Kapoor announces The Dirty Picture 2, fifteen years after the original

Producer Ektaa Kapoor is making a sequel to The Dirty Picture, the 2011 film that starred Vidya Balan and drew on the life of South Indian actress Silk Smitha.

Ektaa shared the news on a podcast, fifteen years after the first film reached theatres. She said she had been thinking about a second part for some time. She went ahead only once she found a story she wanted to tell.

Like the original, the new film will follow the life of one person. Ektaa did not say whose life that will be, and the cast and release date are still under wraps.

Looking back at the first film, Ektaa called it the story of a woman condemned for standing up for her sexuality. "I never saw her as a victim," she said. To her, Silk Smitha was someone who celebrated her sexuality.

Milan Luthria directed The Dirty Picture, and it went on to become a big success. Vidya Balan's turn as Silk won her the National Film Award for Best Actress.
