Ektaa Kapoor confirms The Dirty Picture 2, 15 years after the Vidya Balan film
Producer Ektaa Kapoor has confirmed she is making The Dirty Picture 2, a sequel to the 2011 film inspired by Silk Smitha, and says it will again centre on a woman's story.
Ektaa Kapoor is making The Dirty Picture 2. The producer confirmed the sequel on Ranveer Allahbadia's podcast, 15 years after the original reached theatres.
"One very big film I'm making is The Dirty Picture 2," she said. She added that this time she feels she has a story she wants to tell.
Like the first film, the sequel will centre on a woman. Ektaa did not say whose life will inspire it.
Looking back at the 2011 hit, she said Silk Smitha was judged harshly for owning her sexuality. Ektaa said she never saw Silk as a victim. To her, Silk was someone who celebrated her sexuality, and she noted that the film did very well.
The Dirty Picture opened in cinemas on December 2, 2011. Vidya Balan played the lead, with Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor in the cast. The story drew on the life of Silk Smitha, the South Indian actress who acted in more than 450 films over an 18-year career. She died by suicide at 35 at her home in Chennai.
For now, the sequel's cast and release date have not been revealed. Ektaa has also not announced the project on her social media accounts.
