Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par to release in Japan in spring 2027

Aamir Khan is heading back to cinemas in Japan. His 2025 film Sitaare Zameen Par will open there in spring 2027. It will be his first release as the lead actor in Japanese theatres since Dangal played there in 2018. After a gap of nine years, this is big news for his fans overseas.

Japanese distributor Geek Pictures announced the release on September 25, 2026. In Japan the film will be called Sitaare! The Miracle Team of Stardust. It will play at Human Trust Cinema Yurakucho, Yebisu Garden Cinema and other theatres around the country.

Geek Pictures also opened an official account for the film for Japanese viewers. Its first post called the film a warm, funny and emotional story, and it introduced Aamir to local audiences as the star of 3 Idiots. His production Secret Superstar did reach Japan in August 2019, but Sitaare Zameen Par brings him back there as the lead.

The title uses the Hindi word for stars and nods to his 2007 film Taare Zameen Par, which was released abroad as Like Stars on Earth. The new film is a spiritual follow up, not a direct sequel. It is an official remake of the 2018 Spanish comedy Champions.

Aamir plays Gulshan, a former basketball player whose career has not gone to plan. After reckless behaviour, including drink driving, he is sentenced to community service coaching Sitaare, a basketball team of adults with disabilities. The job starts as a punishment he wants to finish quickly. Over time the players change how he thinks about success, failure and the people around him.

R. S. Prasanna directed the film, which also stars Genelia Deshmukh, Gurpal Singh, Dolly Ahluwalia and Brijendra Kala. The ten players are played by first time actors who have disabilities, chosen after a long audition process. Their casting became one of the most talked about parts of the film. Reports say Aamir is expected to start shooting Ashutosh Gowariker's Lalkaara, a sports biopic on cricketer Lala Amarnath, in October 2026.
