Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has made a decent start at the box office. Even so, the sequel still has a long way to go before it breaks even.

Reports say the film earned a worldwide share of Rs 60.85 crore on its first day, against a break-even target of Rs 285 crore. Overseas markets gave the biggest piece at Rs 25.4 crore. Tamil Nadu added Rs 12 crore and the rest of India Rs 13.5 crore. The Telugu states gave Rs 9.95 crore, with Nizam on Rs 4.5 crore, Andhra on Rs 4.2 crore and Ceded on Rs 1.25 crore. That leaves the Telugu business Rs 27.05 crore short of its own target.

Naga Vamsi bought the Telugu theatrical rights and is releasing the film in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Getting the full investment back will depend on how the film holds up over the weekend and the Dasara holidays after it.

Nelson Dilipkumar directs again after the hit Jailer, and Sun Pictures produces. Vidya Balan is in the cast, and Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi appear in special roles.
