Vidyut Jammwal plays the damru at Mumbai's CSMT ahead of Street Fighter
Vidyut Jammwal shared a video of himself playing the damru at Mumbai's CSMT ahead of Street Fighter, his Hollywood debut as Dhalsim, and said he got the role without an agent.
Vidyut Jammwal played the damru in front of Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and posted the video on Instagram on Sunday, October 11. He shared it as he gets ready for Street Fighter, the live-action film in which he plays Dhalsim.
"Playing the DAMRU is a way for the mind to release control and simply flow. In its pulse, thoughts find rest and stillness takes root," the actor wrote in his caption. In the clip he wears modern clothes and mixes in traditional dance moves as he plays.
Street Fighter is his first Hollywood film. Kitao Sakurai directs this adaptation of Capcom's video game series, and Dhalsim is its Indian yoga master and warrior.
In a recent interview, Vidyut said he got the part without a Hollywood agent and without looking for work there. He said the director's research into the film's eleven main fighters led him to Vidyut, and the role came after an audition and many conversations. "Before he had a conversation with me, he had watched most of my interviews and a lot of my movies," he said. He added that the director's preparation made him feel he was in safe hands.
The actor also spoke about how well Sakurai knows India. He called him one of the few people he has met who can say kalaripayattu, the martial art he practises, the right way. Asked whether more Indian actors in Hollywood would open doors for others, he said he could not promise that but it was possible. He then praised Priyanka Chopra, calling what she has done for the country in cinema "incredible".
