Stree 3 moves to 2028 as Dinesh Vijan eyes Independence Day or Christmas

Fans of the Stree universe will need a little more patience. Producer Dinesh Vijan has said that Stree 3, the next chapter of the horror-comedy series led by Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, will now reach theatres in 2028. The film had reportedly been slotted earlier for August 13, 2027.

Vijan shared the update at an event where Rajkummar Rao was also present. He explained that director Amar Kaushik, whom he called central to the entire universe, first has to wrap up Mahavatar, a film Vijan reportedly described as the banner's most ambitious. According to reports, Kaushik is due to finish that project in June, and Stree 3 would go on floors towards the end of next year.

The good news is that the script is already written. Vijan said Kaushik has completed it and joked that the director feels he gives away too many spoilers. He kept the plot under wraps but promised that everything audiences enjoyed in the earlier films will be back, while the way the story begins and ends will be "a complete revelation." He added that the film could arrive as an Independence Day or Christmas treat in 2028, though no exact date was fixed.

Rajkummar also reportedly looked back on how it all started. He recalled that Stree began as a modest, independent, small-budget film, but the team had strong faith in the story and in Kaushik's approach. He described the set as a relaxed space full of jokes among friends, and said that spirit showed on screen and carried into Stree 2 as well.

The first Stree released in 2018, and reports list Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek Banerjee alongside the two leads. The original cast returned for Stree 2 in 2024, which reportedly became a big box office success. The franchise sits within Maddock Films' wider horror-comedy universe, which reportedly also includes Bhediya and Munjya.
