Prahaar: Rajkummar Rao talks biopics as first song Mere Rehte arrives
Rajkummar Rao's Prahaar, a courtroom drama on public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam and the 26/11 case, has released its first song after a well-received trailer, as Rao speaks about biopics and early opening day estimates take shape.
Rajkummar Rao is gearing up for Prahaar, a courtroom drama built around the life of public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. Nikam is the lawyer who argued the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case in court, and the film centres on that legal battle. The trailer has drawn a positive response, and the makers have now followed it up with the first song.
The track, titled Mere Rehte, is reportedly sung and composed by Vishal Mishra, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya. Reports say the video uses visuals tied to the 26/11 attacks and introduces the courtroom fight. In it, Nikam protects the country through the law, not through guns or military action. The song is out on music streaming platforms along with its video.
According to reports, Avinash Arun directs the film and Dinesh Vijan produces it under Maddock Films, with Wamiqa Gabbi starring alongside Rao. A theatrical release is reportedly set for October 16, 2026.
Rao, 42, reportedly spoke about the project at a panel discussion at FICCI Frames. He said he is happy that filmmakers think of him when they plan a biopic. He called it a tough genre that takes real courage from everyone involved, and added that he has been offered many more biopics than the ones he has made. After 16 years in films, he said he has never seen himself as a brand. "My love for my art would always be first," he said, explaining that he does not want labels like star or superstar to shape the roles he picks.
On the box office front, one estimate reportedly puts the opening day at 5.5 to 6.5 crore. That would place Prahaar among the top five openings of Rao's career, a list led by Stree 2 at 64.80 crore. With strong promotion, reports say the film could even cross 7 crore on day one. That would take it past Stree's 6.83 crore and Mr & Mrs Mahi's 6.85 crore, and make it the third biggest opener of his career.
