Pooja Meri Jaan trailer out: Mrunal Thakur and Huma Qureshi in a tense courtroom drama
The trailer of Navjot Gulati's Pooja Meri Jaan shows Mrunal Thakur as a woman whose rejection of a friend sets off disturbing events, with Huma Qureshi as the lawyer who takes up her case.
The makers of Pooja Meri Jaan released the trailer on Thursday, giving fans their first proper look at Mrunal Thakur and Huma Qureshi sharing the screen. Navjot Gulati directs the film, and Vikram Singh Chauhan and Vijay Raaz play key parts. Maddock Films is behind the production.
Mrunal plays Pooja, a young woman who turns down a romantic proposal from a close friend. That one choice sets off a chain of disturbing incidents around her. Huma plays Sana, a lawyer who takes up the matter and tries to work out what really happened from accounts that do not match.
The trailer holds back its answers on purpose. It moves between Pooja, the people close to her and what follows her refusal, and it leaves viewers asking who is telling the truth. Rejection, obsession and consent sit at the centre of the story.
In her statement, Mrunal called Pooja a character with many layers and said the events around her drew her to the project. She said the part asked her to show a wide range of emotions while keeping back the answers the audience is meant to find for themselves, and called the experience intense but rewarding. Huma said the film looks at how perception shapes the way we see people and events, and how hard it is to separate assumption from fact. She added that Sana brings a legal view into the story.
The film is set to release on October 2, though reports differ on where it will land. One points to a streaming debut on Zee 5, while another says it opens in theatres. The project has reportedly been delayed for close to four years, and Gulati is said to have spoken earlier this year about the strain that long wait put on him. The film has also reportedly been given an 'A' certificate by the CBFC, with a running time of just under two hours.
