Karan Johar praises Drishyam 3 as Ajay Devgn scores his biggest career opening

Ajay Devgn's Drishyam 3 has delivered the biggest opening day of his career, and filmmaker Karan Johar is among those celebrating it. Karan posted his verdict on his Instagram Stories and congratulated the cast and crew on the film's success.

He posted a poster showing Ajay Devgn, Jaideep Ahlawat, Shriya Saran, Tabu and Rajat Kapoor, with the words "What a film. Mazedaar, lajawab." Karan tagged Ajay and Jaideep and called their work "outstanding". He also tagged writer and director Abhishek Pathak, whom he called a "brilliant director". Ajay later reshared Karan's story on his own profile.

The box office numbers match the praise. Drishyam 3 collected Rs 66.7 crore in India on Friday, its first day, beating the Rs 57 crore start of Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan. It also passed the day one totals of Ranbir Kapoor's Animal at Rs 63 crore and Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar at Rs 30 crore. Worldwide, the film reportedly made Rs 95 crore on opening day, and the Gandhi Jayanti holiday on Friday gave it a boost.

The film is the final chapter of the Hindi Drishyam series. Ajay is back as Vijay Salgaonkar, Tabu plays Meera Deshmukh again and Shriya Saran returns as Nandini Salgaonkar, while Jaideep Ahlawat joins in a new role. The first two Hindi films were remakes of the Malayalam originals. This one has a story of its own and continues the journey of Vijay and his family.

Because the story takes its own path this time, Ajay contacted Mohanlal, who played Georgekutty in the Malayalam Drishyam films. At FICCI Frames 2026, Ajay said he wanted Mohanlal to watch the new film, explaining that "this time we've diverted completely" and that "a kind of an approval from him would be nice." He said Mohanlal, who is on a holiday, was "very sweet" about it, and that the two kept talking. Ajay added that he thinks Mohanlal will watch the film soon.
