'Roohi' starring Rajkumar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Sharma is a comedy horror movie directed by Hardik Mehta which got a theatrical release on 11th March 2021.

Storyline

After Amar Kaushik's 2018 released movie 'Stree' starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor which became a blockbuster at the box office, 'Roohi' came out as the second offering from the same production house. But, 'Stree' has set the benchmark for all the horror comedies in Bollywood way too high. Though it is not right to compare Roohi with Stree, as both the movies dwell in the same world of witches, one cannot stop drawing parallels between these two films.

Also, Rajkummar Rao played the lead in both the movies. 'Roohi' garnered a good pre-release buzz and the trailer of the movie hinted that movie is going to give both thrills as well as laughs at the same time. The audience have been expecting a good dose of entertainment from the movie. The movie which was supposed to get released in June 2020 got postponed because of the pandemic and finally made it to the theatres recently on March 11th, 2021.

Story

Bhawra Pandey (Rajkummar Rao) and Kittanni Qureshi (Varun Sharma) are crime journalists in a small town Baagadpur. They also practice Pakdaai Shaadi (bride kidnapping) which is an accepted custom in Baagadpur. One day, their Boss Guniya Shakeel (Manav Vij) commands them to kidnap a girl Roohi (Janhvi Kapoor). They follow their orders and successfully kidnaps her. But, the story takes a huge turn when they find out that Roohi is a possessed girl who has a different side in her. Interestingly, Bhawra falls in love with the innocent side of Roohi and promises her to get rid of the ghost. But on the other hand, Kittanni falls in love with the ghost side of her named Afza and even wants to have kids with her. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

Review

The plot is so convoluted that it took the entire runtime of the film just to establish itself and the movie utterly failed to give the message it intended to. Though the movie lacks a coherent plot and writing, it has its share of laughs. With references from Rose letting Jack die in Titanic and the 'Palat' moment from 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, the movie tickles the laughbones of the audience but there is nothing to rave about the deeper narrative of the film. The climax is even more confusing and leaves the audience frustrated.

The execution of the story by director Hardik Mehta is just average. Though he has handled some scenes well, the movie felt silly at times. On the flip side, the climax is extremely disappointing and the film ends on an abrupt note. Unlike 'Stree' which has a cliffhanger kind of ending, 'Roohi' is became extremely frustrating in the end. The cinematographer should get the bigger piece of the cake as wonderful visuals will make the audience continue watching the film. The music is just average. The production values are good enough.

Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma are like the pillars of this film. It might be because of the character but Rajkummar Rao's role is not that energetic and hilarious as it was in Stree. But Varun Sharma is too good in his role and even gave tough competition to Rajkummar Rao. Janhvi Kapoor who looked beautiful and innocent as Roohi also looked spooky as Afza. Keeping her prosthetic makeup aside, Janhvi gave her best performance in the film. The scenes between Varun Sharma and Jhanvi Kapoor are the highlight of the film also the bond between Varun and Rajkumar is good to see.

Verdict

Despite being a horror-comedy, the movie has utterly failed to justify either of the genres and is extremely disappointing to watch the film.
