Vijay Sethupathi's Tamil drama Baththa, directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, is out in cinemas, with early viewers praising its lead, child actor Sabari and Sai Abhyankkar's music, though some found it slow.
Vijay Sethupathi's Tamil drama Baththa has arrived in cinemas, and the first wave of audience reactions is largely positive. Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, the film pairs Sethupathi with Lijomol Jose in the lead roles. Reports say it opened on October 1, after premiere screenings were held on September 30.
The story follows a gangster whose life takes a turn after an unexpected meeting with an eight-year-old boy inside a restroom. Viewers on social media describe it as a character-driven period drama with a retro feel, one that uses its gangster setup to look at family, responsibility and personal change.
Sethupathi's performance is drawing the most applause, with several fans saying the actor is back in his best form. Child actor Sabari has also won strong praise, and one viewer who rated the film 4.25 out of 5 even predicted awards for the young performer. Sai Abhyankkar's music is being credited with lifting the emotional scenes, while others singled out the humour, the cliffhanger at the interval and the final half hour.
Not every reaction was unreserved. One reviewer, who gave the film 3.25 out of 5, felt the long runtime and slow pace stop it from holding attention all the way through. They still called it a refreshingly different outing for Sethupathi and a warm watch for fans of character-based cinema.
According to reports, filmmaker Atlee has presented the project, which is produced by Cine1 Studios, A for Apple Studios and Star Studio18. Selvakumar S.K. handled the cinematography, R. Kalaivanan the editing and T Muthuraj the production design. Balaji Tharaneetharan earlier directed the well-received Tamil comedy Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, and early viewers are already crediting his writing for making the laughs and the tears land.
