Jana Nayagan leak case: Madras High Court cancels accused's Goondas Act detention

The legal story around Vijay's Jana Nayagan has taken a new turn. The Madras High Court has cancelled the Goondas Act detention order against Umasankar, one of the people accused in the case over the film's online leak. The leak had earlier led to a police investigation and several arrests.

The Chennai Police Commissioner issued the detention order on July 30. Umasankar's sister, Renuka Devi, challenged it in court. She argued that her brother worked as a manager at a textile shop and was not a film editor. A division bench heard her petition and cancelled the order. The bench reportedly included Justices N Sathishkumar and K Rajasekar, and the matter reportedly came up as a habeas corpus petition.

The ruling is a narrow one. It deals only with Umasankar's preventive detention under the Goondas Act. It does not settle the allegations about the leak, and the case against the accused goes on.

Reports say the trouble began when parts of the film, and later the full movie, surfaced online while it was still waiting for censor clearance. The makers then went to the police. Umasankar was reportedly described as a freelance editor at the time of the arrests, a claim his sister's petition disputes.

Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan reportedly reached theatres on July 23, 2026 after several delays, and it is billed as Vijay's final film before his move into politics. The cast is said to include Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Priyamani and Prakash Raj, with music by Anirudh Ravichander. The film reportedly began streaming on ZEE5 on August 21. Box office tracking still varies, with reported worldwide gross figures ranging from above Rs 320 crore to above Rs 350 crore.
