Delhi High Court seeks Salman Khan's reply on Kala Hiran makers' plea for a stay
The Delhi High Court has issued notice to Salman Khan on a plea by the makers of Kala Hiran seeking a stay of his suit against the film's release, citing overlap with his earlier personality rights case.
The Delhi High Court has asked Salman Khan to respond to a fresh application from the makers of Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legal. The filmmakers want the court to pause the proceedings in the actor's lawsuit that seeks to block the film's release. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani issued the notice to Salman on Tuesday.
Producer Amit Jani told the court that the fight over the film largely overlaps with an earlier case Salman filed to protect his personality rights. In that matter, the court granted the actor an ex-parte ad-interim injunction on December 11, 2025. Salman later moved a separate application seeking an interim injunction aimed squarely at the proposed film, and according to the producer's plea, that request is still pending.
The makers argue that the relief Salman wants now, including curbs on the release, exhibition and circulation of the film and its teasers, is substantially the same as what he asked for in the earlier case. Running both matters side by side, they say, would mean parallel litigation over the same film, its promotional material and the alleged breach of the actor's personality or publicity rights.
The film is reportedly based on Salman's life and has been linked to the blackbuck poaching case. Reports say a coordinate bench of the court earlier directed online platforms to take down the film's teaser and related posts. The bench reportedly held that the makers could not use the actor's name, mannerisms and other distinctive traits for commercial gain without his permission.
The makers have reportedly maintained that Kala Hiran is not a biopic and that personality rights protection cannot be used to wipe out public events tied to the blackbuck controversy. They also reportedly told the court the film has not yet been certified by the censor board and that its trailer is not out. Salman, for his part, has reportedly accused them of trying to sensationalise the case at the cost of his goodwill and reputation.
Salman must now file his response to the stay plea. The court will then hear submissions from both sides before deciding the matter.
