Crazy Rich Asians returns as an eight-episode HBO series with the original cast
HBO is turning Crazy Rich Asians into an eight-episode drama series, with Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng and Michelle Yeoh returning and production set to begin in 2027.
Crazy Rich Asians is coming back as an eight-episode HBO drama series instead of a second film. HBO announced in an official post with a teaser that production starts in 2027, with Jon M. Chu and Adele Lim behind the show.
Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng return as series regulars. They play Rachel Chu, Nick Young and Eddie Cheng once again. Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is back as Eleanor Young in a recurring role. The story picks up where the 2018 blockbuster ended and stays rooted in Kevin Kwan's bestselling novels.
Lim co-wrote the original film. She called the show "a Crazy Rich family reunion" and said eight episodes give the team far more time with these characters than one more movie could. She thanked fans for their patience and promised the series "will be worth the wait."
Chu directed the film eight years ago. In a statement, he said that bringing the cast together again "feels like coming home". He added that he has been asked when the sequel is coming almost every day since the film came out.
For Kwan, watching his characters return with the breathing room of a full HBO series is "a dream come true", he said, thanking HBO and Warner Bros. Television for reuniting the team.
