Bollywood's Remake Trend: Examining The Upcoming Release Of "Gumraah"

Titled Gumraah, the movie is the official remake of the Tamil superhit Thadam, which starred Arun Vijay in the lead role. Notably, this movie was also remade in Telugu by Ram Pothineni as Red, which garnered mixed responses.

Since the onset of the pandemic, the Bollywood industry has been struggling to come up with fresh content. The industry faced a lot of confusion about what type of films to make, leading to several remakes that failed to impress the audience. However, Ajay Devgn's Drishyam 2 was one of the only remakes that succeeded post-pandemic. Despite this, remakes of Telugu hits as Jersey, HIT, and Ala Vaikuntapurramulo failed miserably at the box office. Next week, Ajay Devgn's Bholaa, a remake of Kaithi, is set to release.

Now, there is one more remake in the pipeline, set to release on April 7th. Titled Gumraah, the movie is the official remake of the Tamil superhit Thadam, which starred Arun Vijay in the lead role. Notably, this movie was also remade in Telugu by Ram Pothineni as Red, which garnered mixed responses. The Hindi version of Gumraah stars Aditya Roy Kapoor in the lead role, and Sita Ramam beauty Mrunal Thakur essays the role of the police inspector, previously played by Vidya Pradeep and Nivetha Pethuraj in the Tamil and Telugu versions, respectively. The Hindi remake is directed by Vardhan Ketkar.

At a time when remakes are not working in the Hindi industry, the theatrical release of Gumraah is undoubtedly a daring move from the makers. It remains to be seen how the film fares at the box office, given the mixed reception of previous remakes in the industry. Nonetheless, the audience is eagerly waiting to see how this remake will turn out, and whether it will manage to break the stereotype of the failure of remakes in Bollywood.
