'Teddy' is the first Tamil film to use an Indian animation company to design a special animated character. Featuring the real-life couple Arya and Sayyesha in the lead roles, Shakti Soundar Rajan helmed this project.

Storyline

Arya and Sayyeshaa have shared screen space in a couple of movies already. But, the actors joined hands together for the first time with 'Teddy' after their marriage. Touted to be an action thriller, the movie stars a teddy bear in the titular role. After 'Kochadaiiyaan', 'Teddy' is the second Tamil movie to use motion capture technology. Though we have already seen such concepts in a couple of films, the movie teaser and trailer have increased the expectations on the film.

A soul which leaves its comatose body and gets transferred into a giant teddy seeks revenge and asks a person to help her. This is the basic plotline of the film. Director Magizh Thirumeni of 'Thadam' Fame marked his acting debut with this film. Though the movie was supposed to get a theatrical release, the makers opted for the OTT release. The film is now streaming on Disney + Hotstar from 12th March 2021.

Story

Sri Vidya (Sayyeshaa) meets with an accident and gets shifted to a hospital. The medical team gives her a powerful sedative which makes her slip into a medically induced coma, but her soul leaves her body and possesses a teddy bear. So, now the Teddy Bear starts moving around like a living creature and approaches Shiva to help her in seeking revenge. Will Shiva helps them? How the duo gets revenge? forms the rest of the story.

Review

The majority of the movie revolves around a teddy bear which is the first of its kind in the south. Unlike the regular revenge stories, the movie has a fresh and exciting concept. But, the movie utterly failed when it comes to the believability factor. There are some scenes which are just logical and might irk the audience.

The director has penned a different and interesting storyline for the film but has failed to execute it properly. The screenplay is also very slow and doesn't form any emotional connection with the audience. Editing could have been better. Music is impressive. The opening song is too good and even the background score is also up to the mark. Animation works are top-notch. Teddy bear looked realistic. The grand visuals also helped to make the movie watchable.

As Arya and Sayyeshaa are married in real life, it is good to see their chemistry on the screens. Their chemistry worked out really well and became one of the biggest plus points for the film. Both Arya and Sayyeshaa went into this skin off their characters and did a convincing job. Sakshi Agarwal also justified her role. Karunakaran and Masoom Shankar delivered honest performances in the film.

Verdict

Teddy has a good plotline, engaging concept and fine performances with a sluggish screenplay as the  major setback.
