Hichki (2018) became the highest-grossing release of her career. Rani is admired for her range, moving between romance, drama and tough thrillers. Critics praised her as a battered wife in Yuva (2004), a role that won her a Filmfare award for Best Supporting Actress, and as a deaf and blind woman in Black. Her Filmfare wins began with Best Supporting Actress for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
