He has also worked in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and English movies. He was born in Bangalore (India), and was employed as a bus conductor before he joined the Madras Film Institute. He made his debut in Katha Sangama (1975) and became a star with Apoorva Raagangal (1975). He has received numerous awards for many of his films mostly in Tamil. He received his first Filmfare Award for Best Tamil Actor in 1984 for Nallavanuku Nallavan.He has received the Kalaimamani award in 1984 and the M. G. R. Award in 1989. Indian government honored withPADMABHUSHAN AWARD in 2000.
