Rajkummar Rao was born as Raj Kumar Yadav on 31st August 1984 in Premnagar, Gurgaon, Haryana, India. His father Satyapal Yadav was a government employee in Haryana revenue department and his mother Kamlesh Yadav is a home maker. Raj Kumar lost his father in 2017 and mother in 2019.
Rajkummar Rao studied 12th standard in Bells Model School and graduated from the Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College (University of Delhi). During his graduation days, Rajkumar Rao simultaneously did theatres.
After seeing Manoj Bajpayee being highly influenced by his performance, Raj Kumar decided to become an actor in 2008. He enrolled a 2 year acting course at film and Television Institute of India 'FTII in Pune and moved to Mumbai to become an actor.
Raj Kumar is a vegetarian and he changed his surname from Yadav to Rao in 2014. As his mother believes in numerology, she also added an extra m his name. Rajkummar Rao has been in a relationship with Citylights actress Patralekha Paul since 2010. Rajkumar Rao also got formally trained in Taekwondo.
After graduating from FTII in 2008, Rajkumar Rao spent the next year visiting studios and meeting casting directors. His first screen appearance was in 2010 released Ram Gopal Varma's political thriller 'Rann'. In the same year, he auditioned for 'Love Sex aur Dhokha' movie and got selected. He starred in the second story in that anthology film.
After playing some minor roles in noted movies, Rajkummar Rao finally got his much needed break with 'Kai Po Che' movie in 2013. After that, Rajkummar Rao stole the show with 'Queen' and 'Dolly Ki Doli' movies in 2015.
