Kunhikuttan is a respected Kathakali dancer in 1999-era Kerala, but his life offstage is a hard one. He comes from a lower caste, and his upper-caste father refuses to accept him as a son. At home he is stuck in an arranged marriage with Bhageerathi, and he keeps going mostly for the sake of his daughter.
After watching him perform, Subhadra, an educated upper-caste woman who composes music, invites him to play Arjuna in her own stage version of Subhadraharanam. Their closeness defies the caste rules of the time. Kunhikuttan soon begins to wonder whether she cares for him or only for the hero he plays. Caught between pride, family and his art, he struggles to hold on to his own identity.
