Storyline

The movie dates back to 2002, at a location in Uppada, a seaside town in Andhra Pradesh. Aasi aka Aashirvadam (Vaisshnav Teja) is the sone of a fisherman. He does fishing along with his father. He develops ‘feelings’ towards Bebamma (Krithi Shetty) since his childhood. There exists a class difference both in terms of value and wealth between the both.

Bebamma is an upper-caste girl, and daughter of local business Tycoon Raayanam (Vijay Sethupathi), who is a barbarous person. He aspires to develop a shipping yard in the village, by clearing the locals by force.

Bebamma who does her graduation yearns for love as she doesn't get it at home. She is constantly bullied by her cousin, who forces her to marry her. Her father doesn't heed her. Bebamma's mother is bedridden and paralyzed, so even she is of little help to her. Rayanam doesn’t take any action on his nephew to keep their family honor intact. For Raayanam, honor outmodes everything. When Aasi accidentally beats her cousin, she falls for him and their love story begins.

Rayanam doesn’t approve of a low-caste youngster seeing his daughter. What tactics does he use to save his family's pride? How will the love-pair get their love approved? Forms the rest of the story.

Story

An unusual love story with an unusual twist in its plot. A love story that has the same class divide, but has an altogether different ending. Here comes a story to defy the adulation of masculinity and talks about the right prespective.

Review

Buchi Babu Sana’s directorial debut film Uppena shows the often-told tale of class divide and how it endangers tearing apart two youths in love. But Buchi Babu heads to amaze the audience with how this tale ends.

Aasi (Panja Vaisshnav Tej) as a fisherman, father, and the son relationship has been exceptional. Both debutants Vaisshnav and Krithi manage to pull off the complexities of their roles well for the most utmost part. Vijay Sethupathi is perfect as a man set in his opinions and someone who’s used to making his way. And despite Uppena being as expected as they happen, with the rhythms appearing natural, Buchi Babu managed to administer it well, keeping the audience engaged. Devi Sri Prasad’s music and cinematography by Shamdat append to the film’s overall feeling. Navin Nooli did a good job with the editing.

Verdict

Watch Uppena this weekend if you are fond of love stories but avoid high expectations.
