Trance is an acid trip into the mind of Viju Prasad (Fahadh Faasil), a failed motivational speaker who is struggling with mental illness. Trance, written by Vincent Vadakkan, is a daring film that explores the serpentine odyssey of the creation of a billionaire Christian televangelist

Storyline

Viju Prasad (Fahadh Faasil), a small-time motivational speaker with a painful past, is left orphaned suddenly. His search for popularity leads him to Mumbai, where he is recruited by two evil businessmen (played by filmmaker Gautham Menon and actor Chemban Vinod) for a religious project. In no time, Viju transforms himself into Pastor Joshua Carlton, a powerful preacher and miracle healer.

After the Pastor's spiritual empire, Glorious Church, becomes a force to reckon with, troubles ensue when he appears on a TV channel for an interview. How it all ends in a heady tale of corporate machinations is what the second half is about

Story

The protagonist Viju (Fahadh Faasil)-a motivational speaker from Kanyakumari reaches Mumbai to escape distressing past and loneliness and this is where the movie actually beings. Noticing his incredible speaking capabilities, two corporate giants (Gautham Vasudev Menon and Chemban) hire him, change his name to Joshua Carlton and make him a supernatural pastor with the ability to cure any damn disease in the world. How Faasil comes out of all these as things fall apart from his hirers and him is the story you have to watch for self.

Review

Anwar Rasheed’s Trance isn’t a cup of tea for all and definitely not a routine watch. However, this one-man show where Fahadh Faasil is everything goes well for the ones who wish to see a different kind of movie. Apart from him, there are some more good things such as Anwar Rasheed’s visualisation, Sushin’s background score and Amal Neerad’s cinematography.

The first half ends with the needed tense punch when Joshua confronts a journalist (Soubin Shahir) but sickeningly the second half is tedious and sees many characters like Esther Lopez (Nazriya Nazim) and others being introduced. Nazriya plays something totally different in this movie and is seen as a weed smoker and an alcoholic who spies Joshua Carlton.

The boring second half revolves around how Joshua’s mask is pulled off and the truth is revealed to the world.

Verdict

The terrific performance of Fahadh Faasil and the background music will surely take the audience into a trance.
