Veerababu, known as Veeru, returns to his village from the United States after ten years, hoping to marry Sukanya, the woman he loves. He learns that she is about to wed Mahesh that very day. On the edge of the village stands an old castle, where a demon named Raakaasa is said to live. Legend says the demon asks for a human sacrifice about every 500 years, and the villagers still follow the custom out of fear.
After a heartbroken, drunken night near the castle, Veeru stirs up the old dread. Suspicion falls on him, the village turns against him, and only Subbalakshmi stands by his side.
