In 1945, a village lives under a powerful landlord whose family twists the law to suit itself. His brothers Anjaiya and Prasad take any village woman they please, while the shy youngest, Vishwam, married to Rukmani, cannot stop thinking about Sushila, the new schoolmaster's wife. She does not return his interest.
One night the brothers seize Sushila from her home as villagers look on and do nothing. Kept in the landlord's house, she suffers repeated abuse and feels unable to meet her husband again. The schoolmaster seeks justice from the police and senior officials, but each one turns him away, and only the old temple priest offers him help.
