Divya is a lively college student in Madras who has no wish to marry. Her father Chandramouli arranges a match with Chandrakumar, and when worry over her father's health presses her, she gives in and becomes his wife. She moves with him to Delhi, but she cannot see him as her husband. Her past with Manohar, whom she loved in her college days, still weighs on her.
When Chandrakumar asks what gift she would like, she asks for a divorce. The law makes the couple wait a year before they can apply, so they must share a home while each deals with what the marriage means.
