Gopi is a poor young ferryman who carries passengers across the Ganga near his village. Every day he takes Radha, a zamindar's daughter who studies in the city, and gives her a rose. She enjoys his simple, honest nature, and her feelings for him slowly grow deeper. Gopi knows that the gap between their classes leaves no room for a future together. Gauri, a shepherd girl, hopes to marry Gopi, but he does not feel the same about her. When a classmate sends Radha a love letter, her family misreads the situation and begins to plan her life for her. Gopi, Radha and Gauri are pulled between love, status and village gossip.
