Manthan (1976)

Storyline

Dr. Manohar Rao, a young vet, comes to a poor village in Kheda district, Gujarat, in the 1970s, during the early days of Operation Flood. With Deshmukh, Chandavarkar and others on his team, he hopes to start a milk cooperative that the villagers will own and run themselves. Most families here live off their cattle, but the local buyer, Ganga Prasad Mishra, pays them very little for their milk. Rao soon meets suspicion and a sharp divide between upper castes and Dalits. Bhola, a Dalit leader full of anger toward the Sarpanch, turns against the team, and Mishra resents the better prices Rao offers. Bindu, a bold young mother, begins to trust him.
