Krishnaswamy is a kind and honest widower who lives in a village near Kumbakonam with his daughter Kaveri, his son Bharani and his mother-in-law. He wants a better life for his family, so he trusts a man from Madras and joins a chit fund business. The deal is a fraud, and Krishnaswamy is blamed and sent to prison.
While he is locked away, his family falls apart and his children are left on their own. When he is freed, he sets out to find them and bring his family together again. Along the way, he must face the people who ruined his life and the pain that his choices have brought to those he loves.
