John McKenzie, a student from Pittsburgh, travels to Tamil Nadu to study the Mookuththi Amman temple and stays with his friend Vasu's family. Swamiji, who looks after the temple, tells him the old tale of a sacred nose stud with great power, but John trusts only what he sees for himself. He also falls for Vasu's sister Vani, though her parents do not approve.
The evil Kalabhairavan has waited a thousand years to seize the nose stud. When it goes missing, the police blame John and arrest him. Swamiji insists John is innocent, and John runs from custody to find help.
