Story

The movie traces the lives of three generations of three different women sharing the mother and daughter relationship hailing from a dysfunctional family. It talks about their life choices, their estranged relationship, and what binds them together despite the differences. It also interprets society’s leaning to label women no matter what they do.

Review

Actress turned director-writer Renuka Shahane, wife of famous antagonist Ashutosh Rana and daughter of a renowned writer Shanta Gokhale presents a story of women who rethink their life decisions. The films' main character is played by Kajol, who acts as a feisty and foul-mouthed dancer-actor-single mother Anuradha Apte, who isn’t worried by her duties or grief. She is defiant about saying what she feels and doing what she does.

The story fluctuates between women's choices, should they do what they believe or come under the authority of society. Milan (Kunaal Roy Kapur) interviews award-winning author Nayantara Apte (Tanvi Azmi) mother of Anuradha (Kajol) and Robindro (Vaibhav Tatwawaadi). She narrates her choices in life and their influence on her children. Anuradha grows up to be a celebrated Odissi dancer and a flourishing Bollywood actor, who is impulsive. She is also a single mother, who is protective of her daughter Masha (Mithila Palkar). Anuradha has resentment over Nayantara whom she doesn't address as ‘aai’ (mother) for reasons disclosed in due course. Nayan slips into a coma after a brain stroke, compelling Anu to introspect and look back at her relationship with her mother and life have gone by.

The movie lags behind with sluggish narrative and with dark comedy swaying it away from the main plot.

Performances by the actors individually are exceptional but the only flaw remains the screenplay, which lacks the hold over the audience. On the whole, it's a good attempt from the director.

Verdict

Watch it with your family provided you the patience and time to watch. a perfect movie for a weekend watch with the family.
