Story

Sandhya (Sanya Malhotra) is the recently-wedded wife of Astik Giri. She works as an executive who earns Rs 70,000 per month. She is a top-floor resident of Shanti Kunj in Lucknow. The movie opens on the day of Astik’s cremation. Aksit’s father, Shailendra (Ashutosh Rana), and mother Usha (Sheeba), are devastated by the tragic loss of their son. But Astik's young widow, Sandhya who has been in a loveless marriage with him for the past few months is not even able to shed tears. To top it off, she craves for chips, golgappe, and Pepsi. The film also shows her relationship with her friends Parchun (Aasif Khan) and Nazia (Shruti Sharma).

Review

The movie shares a kind of similar plot with 'Queen' as both showcase how a young woman tries to explore and embrace her life after a great tragedy. 'Pagglait' also delves into the life of a young widow who is unable to mourn her dead husband. The movie comes up with a different concept and succeeded in engaging the audience with its gripping screenplay. However, things could have been better in the climax but the movie ended up abruptly.

Instead of showing a widowed Indian woman as a tragic figure, director Umesh Bist narrates to us the story of a woman who gets into salvation after her husband's death. He sure came up with an interesting and captivating script and succeeded in showcasing what he intended to do. Though there are no messages conveyed directly, the film indirectly showcases some progressive touches. Production values are up to the mark. Music is decent. The BGM is good and gripping. Visuals are good and watchable. Editing is crisp.

Sanya Malhotra shined in her role. The movie revolves only around her and she did her best in portraying Sandhya's character. The character has so many layers and Sanya has emoted well and fitted into the character well. Ashutosh Rana's screen presence is rare in the film and he did his best essaying his role. His subtle performance is good to watch. Sheeba Chaddha is excellent in her role. Rajesh Tailang is natural in his role. Shruti Sharma is endearing. Chetan Sharma acted naturally.

Verdict

'Pagglait' is one of such rare films which has a serious premise that touches so many issues in the society but still gives us an entertaining ride.
