Madam Chief Minister is a fictional description of the ups and downs in the life of a strong Dalit leader. It narrates how she rises against all the odds to become the first woman chief minister of India’s most populated and politically influential state Uttar Pradesh.

Storyline

The movie is the story of a girl who becomes CM of Uttar Pradesh without any political background. Tara Roopram (Richa Chadha) is a girl born in a village in Uttar Pradesh. Her father, Roopram (Mukteshwar Ojha) gets killed the very same day by members of a higher caste. Tara’s grandmother, who is upset that she is a girl child, attributes her demise to Roopram. Outraged by ill-fate she tries to kill her. But Tara’s mother (Seema Modi) prevents her from doing so.

Tara grows up and works as a librarian in a university. She gets close to Indramani Tripathi (Akshay Oberoi), a political heir and a political activist in the university. Tara gets pregnant with Indramani's child and asks him to marry her. Indramani shows caste differences as a reason to evade marriage. He advises Tara to abort the child, which she refuses and warns to expose him. His goons try to subdue her. However, Master Surajbhan (Saurabh Shukla), who belongs to the Parivartan Party of India, fights for the lower caste and downtrodden people, saves her.

Tara starts working for his party. She learns politics quickly. She becomes the Chief Minister of the State. The bigger challenge comes when she is compelled to make Indramani a cabinet minister. How will she stop him and avenges her pain completes the story.

Story

A clash between the different classes in society paves the way for a Dalit girl with no political background to rise to the power as Chief Minister of the state. The movie tries to expose both the malice of Girl Child Birth and caste difference in society. It is also a classical example of women's empowerment.

Review

The movie exposes gender and caste discrimination and shows how rampant and infanticide is a common practice those days.

Subash Kapoor gives the audience a busy screenplay with endless events and difficulties in his protagonist’s life and this holds the narrative rolling with variable plot twists. Sure, some fights resolve too conveniently and some twists look impossible, but the point that Tara’s role is so strikingly related to UP’s former CM, it is apparent that nothing is impossible in politics.

The creators strive hard to secure Tara to look like the protagonist of their story - efficacious yet troubled and ballsy yet deluded, often. Little time is spent on the evolution of Tara, from a rank nobody to a mature politician, even though she is never shown to pier any political objectives. This is one flaw in the screenplay that questions the whole intent of the plot.

This film’s consistent commitment to doing simple and indescribable entertainer works. Despite stuffing in too many ground-level issues like casteism, lawlessness, and vote-bank politics, its plot remains true to Tara’s journey.

Richa Chadha does her part pretty well. Her most satisfying scenes are with Saurabh Shukla, who lifts the show with his immense hold and pragmatic description of Tara’s visionary mentor. Manav Kaul as Danish Khan and Akshay Oberoi as Indu, do great in their roles.

Verdict

A must-watch film if you are a political enthusiast and a great fan of lady-oriented films.
