Roshan Mehra, who lives in America, brings his sick grandmother back to her family home in Old Delhi. At first the crowded lanes and noisy neighbours overwhelm him, but slowly he learns their customs, their quarrels and their secrets. He grows close to Bittu, daughter of Madangopal, who dreams of trying out for Indian Idol while her father pushes her toward a marriage she does not want. Roshan backs her hopes and starts to fall for her.
Meanwhile, stories of a mysterious attacker called the Kala Bandar spread fear, and a holy man's claim about the local mosque turns Hindu and Muslim neighbours against each other.
