Simbudevan is a Tamil film director, also credited as Chimbu Devan, whose films mix fantasy, history and comedy. Along with directing, he works as a writer, screenwriter and cartoonist. He is best known for Imsai Arasan 23rd Pulikecei, Arai Enn 305-Il Kadavul and Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam. Before he moved behind the camera, he appeared as an actor in Yema Kedi (1999). His first film as director was Imsai Arasan 23rd Pulikecei (2006), a comedy drama set in the past. He followed it with Arai Enn 305-Il Kadavul (2008). In 2010 he released two films, Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam and Super Cowboy, and he also wrote the story for Super Cowboy. Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavaanikalum arrived in 2014, and Puli followed in 2015. He came back with Kasada Thapara in 2021 and directed Boat in 2024. That same year he also worked on the crew of Indian 2: Zero Tolerance. Across his career, Simbudevan has kept returning to imagined worlds and stories from earlier times, and humour runs through much of what he makes. His skills stretch beyond the director's chair, since he also writes screenplays and draws as a cartoonist, giving him a hand in more than one creative field.
