He has received prize in the All India Sur Singer competition. He made his debut with the Bollywood film "Gaman" in the year 1978. He is an established Ghazal singer and one of the pioneers of Indian fusion music. He has sung many songs for Television Serials.He has received Padma Shri Award by Government of India. He has also received many awards for his Best Playback Singer. He received two National film Award, FilmFare Award, Nandi Award and many more. He has sung more than 500 Tamil songs and he sung over 200 Hindi songs. He has also sung more than 100 songs in Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu films. He has recorded many albums.
