Venkat Ramaiah (SV Rangarao) and Kanaka Durga (Suryakantham) adopt Suguna (Savithri). Then they have their own child Varalakshmi, Kanaka Durga's affection for Suguna lessens. Vengalappa (Relangi) then adopts Suguna. She becomes a doctor and loves Chandram (ANR). Chandram suffers from tuberculosis and forces Suguna to marry doctor Raghunath (Jaggayya). Dr Raghunath dies in an accident. Chandram is cured of TB and returns. Suguna decides to dedicate her life to social work. MT Rao (NT Rama Rao) and Mary aka Missamma (Savitri) portray as a couple and join a school run by Gopalam (SV Ranga Rao) to make a living. Raju (ANR), Gopalam's nephew and also an amateur detective finds resemblances between Gopalam's missing daughter Mahalakshmi and Mary. The story revolves around the troubles they face as a fake couple and discovering whether Mary is Mahalakshmi.

Venu (ANR) enlightens the villagers against Sagarayya (CSR Anjaneyulu), a greedy landlord who grabs barren lands of the village, and reports to the collector. Sagarayya creates a rift between Venu and his father which affects his sister's marriage. Venu starts living separately with his wife Radha (Sowcar Janaki). Rojulu Marayi shows the revolt of farmers against oppressors.
