B. Vittalacharya

B. Vittalacharya was a film director and producer who worked in Telugu and Kannada cinema. Fans gave him two titles, "Jaanapada Brahma" and "Maayaajala Mannan", and he is best remembered for Jaganmohini (1978), Aggi Barata (1966) and Veerakesari (1963). He never won a formal award, yet most of his films did strong business, and the love of his audience became his real honour. He set up his own banner, Vittal Productions, and made his mark in Kannada with Sri Srinivasa Kalyana in 1952. Its success brought more Kannada work, including Kanyadhanam (1954), which he both produced and directed and which was seen as bold for its day, and Mane Thumbida Hennu (1958). He then moved to Telugu films, directing Bandipotu, Veerakesari and Guruvunu Minchina Sishyudu in 1963, followed by Aggi Pidugu (1964), Jwalaadweepa Rahasyam (1965), Aggi Barata (1966) and Chikkadu Dorakadu (1967). His later films included Ali Baba 40 Dongalu (1970), Mosagallaku Mosagadu (1971), Jaganmohini (1978), Gandharvya Kanya (1979) and Nava Mohini (1984). Vittalacharya was famous for the visual effects that filled most of his films. He directed 19 films with N. T. Rama Rao and also took on projects for other producers. His screenplay for Jaganmohini was used again for the 2009 version of the film.
