Anurag Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap is a Hindi film director, writer, producer and actor, best remembered for Black Friday, Dev.D and the two-part saga Gangs of Wasseypur. Four Filmfare Awards stand to his name, and the French government honoured his work in 2013 with a knighthood in the Order of Arts and Letters. He first drew notice by writing Satya (1998) with Ram Gopal Varma. Censors blocked his first film as director, Paanch, so it never reached cinemas. Black Friday (2004), about the 1993 Bombay blasts, waited until 2007 for release and won praise from critics. After No Smoking (2007) struggled, Dev.D (2009), his new spin on Devdas, became a hit, and Gulaal (2009) followed. Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) carried his name across the world. He backed Shahid (2012) and The Lunchbox (2013) as a producer, and the second brought him a BAFTA nomination. Bombay Talkies (2013), Ugly (2014), Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016) and Mukkabaaz (2018) came next, along with Manmarziyaan. He later directed Kennedy (2023), Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat (2023), Nishaanchi (2025) and Bandar (2026), and acted in Leo (2023) and Viduthalai: Part II (2024). Kashyap is known for hard, gritty stories of crime and politics, often drawn from real events and books. He co-directed Sacred Games, the first Netflix Original series made in India, and often lends his name to films by other directors.
