'Deyyam' is a horror-thriller film starring Rajshekar. Controversial director Ram Gopal Varma wielded the megaphone for this project. Swathi Deekshith played the female lead in this film.

Storyline

Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, the movie was initially titled as 'Patta Pagalu' and was supposed to get released in 2014 itself. But the director who lost interest in the film quit the project. Rumors were rife that Ram Gopal Varma had left the project to Rajashekar and the senior actor and his wife Jeevitha were to decide the fate of the film. But after shelving the project for so long, director Ram Gopal Varma has finally revived the project and gave it a shape.

The director changed the title of the film to 'Dheyyam'. RGV has come up with a horror film titled as 'Deyyam' in 1996 with JD Chakravarthy and Maheshwari in the lead roles and the movie became a super hit. Now, with the same title, the same director came up with another horror film. Akshay Kumar played the role of a middle-aged person with the teenage daughter. After impressing the audience with the trailer, the film finally made it into the theatres on 16th April 2021.

Story

Shankar (Rajshekhar) runs a mechanic garage. His daughter Vijaya aka Vijji (Swathi Deekshith) is a college student. Just when everything is going right in their life, the twist in the tale arises when a spirit named Guru enters Vijji's body. The back-to-back supernatural incidents give sleepless nights to the family. Guru in the body of Vijji also tries to kill some people. Why the spirit entered Vijji's body? Why is he killing people? What did Shankar do to rescue Vijji forms the rest of the story.

Review

The film has nothing different to offer. It has the same storyline where a person gets possessed by a spirit which seeks revenge. But even in such cases, the execution of the story and the narrative plays a crucial role. Though the first half is slow-paced and boring, the second half has some engaging episodes. The movie was supposed to get released 7 years back. So, we get a feeling that we are watching an old film.

Ram Gopal Varma excelled in making horror films. He has an experience of coming up with some spine-chilling horror films and even 'Dheyyam' has some typical RGV mark scenes which impress the audience. Though the creepy sounds and scenes will give us some jumpscares, the film doesn't have any striking points which leave an impact on the audience. Music helped a lot for the film. Some of the scenes are loud but BGM is decent. Cinematography is too good. Production values are impressive.

Swathi Deekshith only has a single expression and she carries the same serious creepy vibes throughout the film. Swathi sure delivered her best performance in her role. Rajashekar did a good job in essaying the role. His acting especially in the emotional scenes is good. He emoted well in the scary scenes too. He carried most of the film on his shoulders with his performance. It is also good to see late actors like Ahuti Prasad and Devadas Kanakala after a long time. Tanikella Bharani, Anita Choudhary and Sana also acted well.

Verdict

Even after the climax the audience will still have some unanswered questions and the director has left so many loose ends untied. However, RGV fans who wants to see some RGV mark horror scenes might enjoy the film.
