> Verity, the thriller based on Colleen Hoover's novel and starring Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett, is now in theaters with no post-credits scene and an ending that leaves its central mystery open.

Verity, the big screen version of Colleen Hoover's 2018 bestseller, opened in theaters on October 2, 2026. The psychological thriller puts Dakota Johnson alongside Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett, and reports say Michael Showalter directed it. If you want to know whether to stay after the credits, there is reportedly no post-credits scene. You can leave as soon as the story ends.

Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a writer who is struggling to get by. She is brought to the remote Crawford estate to finish a book series for the famous author Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway. While she works there, Lowen finds disturbing autobiographical writing that pulls her into dark discoveries about Verity's husband Jeremy, played by Hartnett.

Reports say the film runs 1 hour and 54 minutes and is rated R, and no streaming date has been announced yet. In India, it has reportedly been given an 'A' certificate after the CBFC cut 23 seconds of intimate scenes. Critics seem split, and the film reportedly holds a 37% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Viewers online are divided too. One felt the slow start gave way to a stronger second half as the mystery grew. Another called Hathaway truly creepy and said the layered story needs your full attention. A fan of the book was harsher, saying the film works as a movie but cuts the very scenes that gave the novel its thrill.

The ending stays open, just as the book's did, and the novel has no sequel. Reports say readers have argued since 2018 about whether a disturbing manuscript or a later letter tells the truth, splitting into 'Team Manuscript' and 'Team Letter' camps. Hathaway has reportedly said she backs the letter and does not trust Lowen, and Johnson seemed to agree with her. Hoover has not settled the question and has only said her own view has changed over the years.
