# Tillotama Shome hits back at troll who mocked her post on women's safety

Actress Tillotama Shome has written a long, personal note on Instagram about women's safety, then hit back hard when a social media user mocked it. The note grew out of a quiet moment at a traffic signal in Mumbai's Juhu. Nothing actually went wrong there, yet her unease would not go away.

Tillotama described spotting a young woman on the footpath, leaning on a metal railing and absorbed in her phone. Men walked past and looked at her. "Some glances lingered, but there was nothing offensive," she wrote. She felt torn between wanting to warn the woman to stay alert and wanting her to "walk through life with trust". When one man passed very close, she even thought of stepping out of her car. He simply walked on, and she told herself, "This is Bombay, relax, relax."

The feeling stayed with her. With someone she knows in hospital, she woke from a nightmare wondering whether a sedated woman on a hospital bed is truly safe. She admitted nothing had happened in Juhu, but wrote, "Even when nothing happens here, it happens there, to someone in some part of my country". Still, she ended on hope, saying people "break again and again to come together again and again" for an "Incredible India".

One user, whose comment has since been deleted, suggested she had anxiety issues, told her to see a doctor, and asked why she had not simply invited the woman into her car. Tillotama replied, "Welcome to the conversation. Thank you for your inputs. How sensitive of you." She said anxiety affects a huge number of people and hoped he would understand it one day, for his own sake and for the women in his life.

She admitted the car idea had crossed her mind, but she worried the woman would think she was "mad". Answering the jab about privilege, she wrote, "You are trying to turn this conversation towards my privilege. Am aware of it." She added that she used public transport until Covid and had worked hard for the privilege she has now.

Known for Monsoon Wedding, Qissa and Delhi Crime, Tillotama was last seen in the Netflix courtroom drama Ikka, which came out in July. Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, it also stars Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna.
