# Supreme Court orders Rajpal Yadav to deposit ₹2 crore by October 13

> The Supreme Court will hear Rajpal Yadav's plea against a High Court order in his Ata Pata Laapata cheque-bounce case only after he deposits ₹2 crore by October 13, and warned that his sentence could be increased.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday told actor Rajpal Yadav to deposit ₹2 crore by October 13 in the cheque-bounce case tied to his 2012 film Ata Pata Laapata. Until that money is paid towards what the complainant is owed, the bench will not take up his challenge to the High Court order.

Yadav came to court with a demand draft for ₹1.15 crore. His lawyer explained that the actor had tried to pay through RTGS at the Registry, but that route was not allowed. The other ₹85 lakh will come from a person buying Yadav's property, who also attended the hearing and will pay once the sale goes through.

Judges on the bench were unhappy with how Yadav had handled the matter. They warned that his sentence could be increased.

At the root of the case is a loan that Murli Projects Pvt Ltd allegedly gave Yadav in 2010 for the film. Seven cheques of ₹1.05 crore each, issued to repay it, bounced. Yadav puts the liability at ₹5 crore and says the film did far more damage, with losses of about ₹200 to 250 crore that also hurt its producers.

Once the order was passed, the mood in court lightened. The Chief Justice of India used the film's title to sum up the case: "Like your movie, your money is also Ata Pata Laapata, gayab." Yadav replied, "Pranam karta hoon." The CJI then told him to make a good film that entertains people, and joked that Supreme Court advocates act well enough to be cast in it.

Outside court in Delhi, Yadav pushed back on calling the money a loan. "Loans aren't taken out for films. You take a loan to build a house or buy land, not to make movies," he told reporters. He said he has the deepest respect for the country, the Supreme Court and the judiciary, and that everyone would accept whatever decision is reached.
