The film opened on July 31 and has since collected close to $2.5 billion worldwide. That puts it third on the all-time list, behind only Avatar and Avengers: Endgame, and reportedly makes it the biggest film of the year so far.

One record is still out of reach. No film has ever crossed $1 billion in North America alone, and Brand New Day currently stands at $950.6 million there. The extra run could be what carries it across that line, as the target would likely have stayed out of reach without fresh screenings.

Indian fans played a big part in this story. The film overtook Avengers: Endgame to record the biggest opening day ever for a non-Indian release in the country. Reports put the first day at Rs 72.44 crore, with close to a million people turning up on the opening Thursday alone, and the four-day extended opening weekend at Rs 328.5 crore across the country. It reportedly went on to become the highest-grossing foreign film in India with over Rs 500 crore gross.

Brand New Day follows Peter Parker as he tries to rebuild his life after a spell wiped him from the memories of his friends and family. Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Tramell Tillman and Florence Pugh round out the cast. Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Reports also suggest that a re-release before December could help Marvel build support for its tentpole Avengers: Doomsday, which brings Robert Downey Jr. back to the franchise along with several of the original Avengers. The film is said to matter for the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe too, as it introduces the Mutants, with Sadie Sink playing Jean Grey.
