Singer Sona Mohapatra has stood up for actress Tanushree Dutta, who is facing heavy criticism online for calling the late Nana Patekar "evil dead".

In a video, Sona said she understood that people were grieving the veteran actor. What she could not accept was the attack on Tanushree for talking about her own #MeToo experience. Sona said Tanushree had spoken up about being harassed on set by Nana, then fought a long and tiring battle that cost her in public and at work. Asking her to put that aside now and act out grief made no sense, the singer argued.

Growing old does not make anyone free of fault, Sona said, and death does not erase the uncomfortable parts of a life. She asked why people link old age with virtue and death with sainthood. Fans can mourn Nana, she added, without asking Tanushree to rewrite her past.

Sona also hit out at women influencers and content creators who had joined the pile-on, though she named nobody. Rakhi Sawant was among those who criticised Tanushree's statement on social media.

The singer recalled being dropped from a show after filming nearly 19 episodes because she backed the #MeToo movement. She pointed to composer Anu Malik, who came back to the industry after facing allegations, to argue that men and women are judged by different rules.

Nana Patekar died on Thursday morning after a severe cardiac arrest at his home in Goa. His body was brought to Pune and then driven to the family farmhouse in Donje village. His last rites, held with state honours, drew political leaders, film personalities and more than 1,000 admirers. Amitabh Bachchan shared old clips of him on Instagram, including one of Nana singing 'Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala' in the Kaun Banega Crorepati hot seat.
