# Resident Evil passes Rs 17 crore in India, crosses $76 million in North America

Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot is pulling crowds on both sides of the world. The Hollywood horror thriller reportedly wrapped its opening week in India at Rs 17.20 crore gross, paid previews included, while its North American tally has already reached $76.9 million in six days.

In India, the film's biggest days came early. After Rs 0.50 crore from previews, it earned Rs 2.60 crore on Day 1 and Rs 4.10 crore on each of Day 2 and Day 3. Collections then settled between Rs 1 crore and Rs 2 crore a day, with Day 7 estimated at around Rs 1 crore, a 20 per cent fall from the day before.

Reports say good word of mouth should keep the film moving, and a full run of Rs 30 crore to Rs 40 crore gross is possible if the pace holds. Hollywood horror has done well in India this year, with Obsession and Lee Cronin's The Mummy also finding strong audiences.

The numbers in North America are even bigger. Released on September 18, the reboot opened to $60.1 million over its first weekend and still leads the domestic charts. It reportedly added $4.5 million on its first Wednesday, down 35.2 per cent from a discounted Tuesday. That ranks as the fifth biggest Wednesday ever for both R-rated horror films and video game adaptations.

That run has already carried it past the lifetime domestic haul of the 1995 Mortal Kombat film, which collected $70.4 million. It is expected to overtake Mortal Kombat II on Thursday, and projections put its second weekend at $24 million to $26 million. With $42.9 million from international markets, its worldwide total stands at $119.8 million.

The story follows Bryan, a medical courier sent out on a snowy winter night to deliver sensitive cargo to Raccoon City General Hospital. When a viral outbreak throws the city into chaos, he must survive the crisis and still reach his destination. Set alongside the events of the Resident Evil 2 video game, the film stars Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry and Kali Reis, and marks the second reboot in the franchise.
