> Filmmakers N. Chandra and Mehul Kumar shared memories of Nana Patekar after his death on October 8, while Pravin Tarde said Bollywood should have turned up at a funeral attended by thousands of farmers.

Nana Patekar died of a cardiac arrest in Goa on October 8. The directors who worked with him are now sharing memories of him, and one filmmaker has criticised Bollywood for staying away from his last rites.

Marathi filmmaker and actor Pravin Tarde said a few thousand farmers walked in the funeral procession. In his view, they meant more to Nana than any perfumed film star. Nana never claimed to belong to Bollywood, Tarde said, and always called himself a farmer. Still, Tarde admitted he had a complaint: the people Nana called friends should have come. He named Jackie Shroff and Suresh Wadkar as two who did.

N. Chandra, who directed him in Ankush, Pratighaat and Wajood, said the loss had left him in shock. Ankush was Nana's first film as a hero. Chandra paid him Rs 10,000 on a total budget of Rs 12 lakh. When the money ran out during the shoot, Nana mortgaged his own house to raise Rs 2 lakh for the film. Chandra paid him back once Ankush became a hit, and gave him his brand-new scooter too.

Mehul Kumar directed Nana in Tirangaa, Krantiveer and Kohraam. He said Rajinikanth and Naseeruddin Shah both passed on the Tirangaa role because they were nervous about acting opposite Raaj Kumar. Nana said no at first as well, telling Kumar he did not do commercial films. When he finally agreed, he warned that he would walk out if Raaj Kumar interfered. By the end of the shoot the two actors were close friends.

Kumar had also written a script called Mission Tirangaa with Nana in mind. He said he cannot picture it being made with any other actor.
