> Musicians who knew Nana Patekar remember an actor who phoned artists to praise their raags, sat through whole sitar workshops and hosted intimate baithaks at his Pune home.

Nana Patekar was known for his fierce screen presence, but musicians now remember him as one of the most devoted listeners in any audience. Reports say he died on October 8 at his home in Dona Paula, Goa.

Sitarist Shakir Khan, son of sitar maestro Ustad Shahid Parvez, said the actor called him from the gym two months ago, full of praise after listening to his raag Bagesri. Before hanging up, Patekar told the young musician to hold on to his legacy and stay away from gimmicks.

Shakir also recalled Patekar coming to one of the sitar workshops he holds in Pune every three months. He stayed for the full three hours and watched the participants being guided. Then he asked Shakir to play raag Pilu and listened in silence.

Mumbai cultural curator Shashi Vyas, founder of the music organisation Pancham Nishad, said Patekar was a regular at the Chintamani Jayanti Samaroh, held in memory of Vyas's father, the vocalist and composer Pt. C.R. Vyas. When he could not attend, he always called to say he would miss it. According to Vyas, his listening covered Begum Akhtar, Bal Gandharva, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and Kishori Amonkar, and in recent years the Carnatic musician T.M. Krishna as well.

Vyas added that Patekar held small baithaks at his Pune home, where favourite musicians such as Ustad Rashid Khan came for lunch or dinner.

Singer Subashree Debnath shared a similar memory on Facebook. On the Sa Re Ga Ma show, the actor asked her to sing the Lata Mangeshkar classic 'Jaane kya baat hai'. She wrote that his warmth and love for music that day left her with a memory she will keep forever.

Patekar himself often said in interviews that classical music calmed him and shut out the chaos around him.
